מבוא
בריטניה מסיימת את מלחמת העולם השנייה כאחת המעצמות המנצחות במערכה
הקשה מעולם. אך תחושת השמחה והגאווה לא נמשכה זמן רב; הכלכלה הבריטית
ניזוקה באופן קשה ומשמעותי כתוצאה משנות המלחמה, המשק נכנס לתקופת משבר
ארוכה והאימפריה של הוד מלכותה מצאה עצמה בצומת הכרעות היסטוריות, איתן
עליה להתמודד. כל זאת היה על רקע ניצניה הראשונים של התקופה, בה התברר כי
המערכת הבין לאומית הופכת להיות מושפעת משני כוחות יריבים וחזקים מאד:
ארצות הברית וברית המועצות.
בעבודה אסקור את ההתפתחויות והשינויים העיקריים שעברה מדיניות החוץ
הבריטית, במהלכה של המלחמה הקרה. אציג ואנתח נקודות ציון ואירועים חשובים
לאורך חמישים השנים שמאז סיום מלחמת העולם השניה ועד לנפילת חומת ברלין,
ובינהם: תחילתה של המלחמה הקרה - ובכלל זה המצור על ברלין והקמת נאט"ו,
"היחסים המיוחדים" בין בריטניה וארצות הברית שהתפתחו בשנות ה50 -', משברים
ביחסים אלו - בדגש על משבר סואץ בשנת 1956, השינוי בתפיסות האסטרטגיות של
בריטניה לקראת סיום אותו העשור והסיבות שהובילו אליהן, תקופת תאצ'ר -
ובעיקר מלחמת פוקלנד ומדיניותה של תאצ'ר כלפי ארצות הברית וכלפי ברית
המועצות, וכן התמודדותה של בריטניה עם השינויים המשמעותיים שחוותה אירופה,
עם סיומה של המלחמה הקרה.
השאלה שאנסה לברר במהלך העבודה היא: באיזו מידה חלו שינויים במעמדה,
תפקידה ויוקרתה הבין לאומיים של בריטניה, ואם אכן היו כאלה - מהם הגורמים
והסיבות שהובילו לכך?
