מחקרים רבים הראו כי אצל ילדים חרשים קיים עיכוב בהתפתחות תיאוריית ה mind .
הערכה לעצמת הפער מביא (Lundy (2002 המדווח כי ילדים חרשים בגיל 7 עד 8 עברו מבחני TOM ברמה של ילדים שומעים בני 4 עד 5, כלומר הפער בהתפתחות הוא של כ 3 שנים.

הסיבה לעיכוב בהתפתחות TOM אצל ילדים חרשים היא שלילדים חרשים הזדמנויות מועטות יותר לתקשורת בינ-אישית ולכן חסרות להם הזדמנויות ללמידה על מצבים מנטליים.
לדוגמא, ילדים חרשים התקשו בזיהוי ובהבנת המשמעות של כיוון המבטים בניסויים שנערכו ע"י Scott ; Russell; Gray; Hosie. ; and Hunter (1999).
