אורליוס אוגוסטינוס נולד בשנת 354 לספירה ומת בשנת 430. להוציא חמש שנים הוא
חי כל ימיו בצפון אפריקה הרומית, ובשלושים וארבע שנות חייו האחרונות שימש
כבישוף של עיר הנמל ההומה היפו, כיום אנאבה שבאלג'יר. בהיפו, רק לבישוף
אוגוסטינוס היו ספרים, ומשפחתו לא היתה בעלת רקע תרבותי גבוה. תרבות זו רכש
באמצעות חינוך. בכוח כתביו, אשר הכמות ששרדה מהם עולה על זו של כל מחבר
קדום אחר, פשטה השפעתו המקיפה, לא רק על בני זמנו אלא גם על המערב מאז
זמנו.
