התפתחות טכנולוגיית המחשבים האישיים בארגונים באה לידי ביטוי בעיקר במיחשוב משתמשי קצה. האצת תהליך מיחשוב משתמשי הקצה העמידה את הארגונים בפני אתגרים חדשים רבים, ואל מול קשיים לא מעטים. בעקבות מהפיכת המיקרו-מחשבים (המחשבים האישיים), חוזים המומחים שינויים הדרגתיים בתרבות המיחשוב בארגונים, שינויים שהסיטו את מרכז הכובד של האמצעים לעיבוד נתונים ברמת הארגון מן הניירת אל המחשב המרכזי, ומן המחשב המרכזי לטכנולוגיית המיקרו-מחשבים.
ההתפתחות המואצת של טכנולוגיית המחשבים האישיים מתבטאת ברשתות תקשורת, תחנות עבודה, ומעבדים מתמטיים רבי עוצמה. בעקבות זאת ובעקבות התקשורת הישירה למחשבים הגדולים, במקרה הצורך, אין טעם לדבר כיום על חדירת המחשבים האישיים לארגון, אלא על מחשבים ככלל. משמעות מהפיכת המחשבים האישיים היא כי בעקבות טכנולוגיה זו, הגיע המחשב אל שולחנו של כל אחד מן העובדים בארגון, החל בפקידים ובעובדי הדרג הנמוך, וכלה במנהלים הבכירים, ולא נותר נחלתם הבלעדית של המתכנתים ועובדי המחשב המומחים. כל עובד בארגון יכול כיום לעשות ככל שמצריך תפקידו - החל בעיבוד תמלילים ובעיבוד נתונים בגליונות אלקטרוניים, דרך שליפת אינפורמציה מתוך ומחוץ לארגון, הרצת סימולציות ומודלים לקבלת החלטות, שימוש בתוכנות יחודיות למשימות מסויימות, וכלה בבניית סביבות עבודה ו'תכנות' אפליקציות יחודיות.
מאמר זה ידון בהשפעות מהפיכת המיחשוב על הארגון. הפרק הראשון יעסוק בהגדרה תאורטית של המבנה הארגוני. הפרק השני ידון בהשפעות על המבנה הארגוני ועל דרכי הפעולה הארגוניים. והפרק השלישי יתאר את ההשפעות האישיות על חברי הארגון.
